In case you missed it, Cool Hand Lex (also known as Bangs Nicely) released the fourth installment of his Group Therapy mix series this week and I think this is something you're going to want to check out. Along with minimixes from talented local DJs like John Larner, Niko Flores, Trilli and E:\Drive, yours truly was also able to get in on the action.
Each DJ on this volume was asked to put together a minimix (no longer than 12 minutes) and was given full artistic liberty for the content on the condition that we include some local Indianapolis talent as well. This presented an interesting mix of styles and genres between all of the talent on this volume from hip hop to drum & bass into indie dance, future bass, and electro house. There's truly something for everyone on this one and I'm honored to have been asked to bring some drum & bass into the fold alongside DJs that have made this their career and lifestyle. Huge shouts to Cool Hand Lex for allowing me to represent drum & bass in this volume.
I can't speak for the other DJs tracks, but I wanted to highlight the artists I chose for my section. I think Indianapolis drum & bass producers don't get the kind of attention they deserve so I challenged myself to get a little Indianapolis into every track. I recommend listening to the entire mix, but my section starts at around 11:30.
Oreo Jones - Sooner or Later (Dave Owen remix)
I:Machine - Activate
Truth - Inside Your Thoughts (Hajimari bootleg)
I:Machine - 046879
Dave Owen - This 1 (feat Johnny Utah)
Aseity - Ego
If you've been in tune with the hip-hop scene in Indianapolis in the last decade, you know the name Oreo Jones. This guy's been working the scene and representing Indianapolis something fierce. Along with putting out dope hiphop, he's also the man behind the annual Chreece event in Fountain Square. You can check out his video for "Fhloston Paradise" here.
On the Oreo Jones remix and the original "This 1" (with Indianapolis artist Johnny Utah) is the mighty Dave Owen. In the last decade, Dave has taken his Drum & Bass game to a whole new level. We're talking an INTERNATIONAL level here. He's toured and played all around the globe and has produced tracks for some of the biggest labels in the liquid drum & bass game including Chronic, Fokuz, Liquid V, Rubik and Mac2. Even though he's since moved to NYC with his wife and baby girl, many old school heads remember Dave when he was a regular at every drum & bass spot in town. Check out his new tune "Got 2 Have U" with Revival and Glen E Ston here.
The man of many names, I:Machine has been a figure in Indianapolis Drum & Bass for many years. He even helped put together the Juxtapoze events at the Melody Inn many moons ago. I picked his tunes "Activate" and "046879" because I felt they not only fit well in the mix, but were representative of his style. Activate, while deep and brooding, still has a light touch and a driving bassline. "046879" on the other hand features some well-used breaks and a piano lead that really ties the track together. You can find both tracks on his soundcloud here
This artist gives me hope for the future of drum & bass. Despite only turning 21 late last year, Hajimari has already made a name for himself in the realm of drum & bass. With an EP on Santoku Records last year and a feature on Noisia radio, I say booooourns to anyone who thinks drum & bass is only for old people. You can check out his latest tracks (including the Truth bootleg in my mix) on his soundcloud here
I think of all of the artists in my mix, I'm the happiest to include a track from Aseity the most. While this is a new moniker, Aseity is no stranger to the game and he's also not just into drum & bass. Just check out his soundcloud. He's got releases out of Dubstep, Breakbeats, and House as well. If you catch his live sets, you'll get to see a crafty DJ, an excellent turntablist and on rare occasions, a killer guitar player. Aseity is a true musician and showman. Which brings me to...
If you're interested in seeing some of these artists live and you're not busy June 12th, you can catch Aseity, I:Machine, and Hajimari live at the Melody Inn for the NAP DNB 4 Year anniversary party! We've also got great sets from Noncompliant, Dyonysiz, Kene Mahusay, and Ejion. Cover is only $2 for 2 stages of great music, but you do have to be 21 to enter. Records drop at 10pm, hope to see you there!
